Wapomeo Director Announcement!
Today is an exciting day for many reasons. Firstly, we are only 3 days away from registration opening for summer 2017 – applications go live at 12:00am on November 7th 2016.
Secondly, we are happy to announce that the new Camp Wapomeo summer Director is MERCEDE ROGERS. With her wealth of camp, teaching and outdoor experience, we are so excited for Mercede to return to Canoe Lake as Director. As she enters into this new role, Mercede attributes this opportunity to the continued support of past Wapomeo Director, Jackie Pye. As Jackie and Mercede are close friends and colleagues, we expect a seamless transition for summer 2017.
Mercede’s journey with TSC began as a Kiowa in 3A. Her mom was a counselor at Wapomeo and her uncle – a former camper at Ahmek and Head of Riding for a number of years both knew that Wapomeo would be a natural fit for Mercede and they were right! It was clear to everyone that knew her as a young camper that camp would always be part of who she was.
Over the years, she became fully immersed in the TSC environment; from work camp to fall crew, from SD to Long Trip Counselor, Head Guide as well as Assistant Director to Jackie Pye in 2011 and working in the Toronto office in the offseason – Mercede has a wealth of knowledge and deep love for TSC. She also brings a unique perspective to the role as she was the Head Guide at Ahmek in 2009 and 2010 and has an appreciation for both camps. An active member with the Ontario Camps Association, she has worked as a guide and outdoor educator with Outward Bound, Camp Tanamakoon, Camp Temagami and MHO Adventures and has pursued training and certification in Risk Management from the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
She believes in the importance of nature connection and developing resiliency and awareness through authentic wilderness interactions. Mercede holds a Bachelor of Education with a specialty in Outdoor and Experiential Education from Queen’s University and as a teacher, was focused on character education and wellness. Mercede has taught at a number of private schools in Toronto and is the former Trip Coordinator at The York School where she facilitated overnight residential camp programs, international service excursions and national travel opportunities for the students.
Her passion for the canoe and the outdoors is surmounted only by her passion to share her experiences with others, especially her family; camping and exploring with her husband Mike and young son in all four seasons. Most recently, they completed a 31 day trip in the Temagami area.
Mercede knows that every day at camp is a good day and looks forward to working with parents, staff and campers to make every camper’s experience exceptional. Mercede will be joined at Wapomeo by her husband Mike and their young son Dylan.
Welcome home, Mercede! We cannot wait to get the summer started.
